Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Seven Mile Recovery

Map of Seven Mile Recovery RunAnother Tuesday, another seven mile loop of the lake with Frank and Sean in really awful conditions: low seventies, fine, but when will the 95% humidity go away?. Continuing our tradition of changing it up, we headed off counter clockwise and started chatting about this and that. It turns out that Sean had seen Murderball this past weekend, so that kept us busy for most of the distance to MoPac where we stopped to get a drink. Unlike yesterday’s run, I had no qualms about refreshment today.

After that we ran East along the North side, chatting a little bit here and there about the Muddy Buddy, marathon training, our 10 mile pace run yesterday, and whatever else came to mind. For some reason we were really pushing up each of the hills, I’m not sure if that was Frank’s idea or Sean’s though. It wasn’t mine, but I stuck with it anyway and - dare I admit this - it actually felt good. Oh, the horror.

We took a final stop at the Holiday Inn water fountain, which was actually slightly cold if you can believe that, and headed off again. Once more, I don’t know whose idea it was, but after we made the turn onto Riverside we just picked up the pace. The odd thing was that, while it sucked, it didn’t on the whole suck any more than the previous six miles had. I certainly didn’t feel like we’d just sped up by 90 seconds, but we had alright. We kept it up all the way back to RunTex, and used that to justify a lack of stridage when we got there.

Time   10:15   9:30   10:33   9:16   8:16   10:04   8:08   0:17 (8:00 pace)
HR   144   155   151   156   160   159   163   165

Looking at that, I see that we actually started to pick it up around mile five. Huh. Didn’t even realize it. Water in miles three and six. The good news is that, while its still relatively high, my heart rate is getting lower over time. Even better, its dropping nice and quickly whenever I take a rest. Tomorrow we’re revisiting our 2000M repeat park course. Last time I managed a 7:00 pace. This time? Let’s just say that I need to actually get some sleep tonight, for a start.

It’s gonna be another humid one tomorrow. Yuck.

  2. So what’s your resting HR these days, Richard? I’m thinking its got to be pretty darn low these days.

  3. We haven’t heard from you in awhile. I hope your training is going well.
