Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Framingham Repeats

Map of 800M (ish) repeatsI met up with Steve - our Sr. VP of sales - today to try to get some 800M repeats in. He was scheduled for 880s, I had 800s, but the difference was small and we couldn’t find a convenient track anyway, so we headed out to a nearby industrial park that wasn’t going to be too crowded at 6AM. Steve is training for Chicago with similar goals to my own NYC attempt, so we figured this would work out pretty well.

We clocked off a half mile or so warmup and found ourselves near the Bose facilities, which seemed to be suitably deserted. The first thing we did when we got there was a lap of the building to try to get a feel for the distance. It seemed to be about right - maybe a touch short - so we teed off and did the next lap hard. Our time was great - 2:40 - but the distance clocked at around .44 miles, shorter than we wanted. The near 6:00 pace wasn’t going to be sustainable either. Knowing that we decided to add in the rest of the parking lot for the remainder of the laps. Figure approximately .565 miles for the rest of ‘em, or a bit over 900 meters.

Our downtimes were pretty comfortable at around 3:45 between each cycle of “active rest” - with the Gazelles I’d probably have been doing closer to 2:00. The ground here was more challenging than a track would have been though, with about 40 meters of fall for the first half of each circuit followed of course by 40 meters of rise for the second half. All in all, it was a great workout and a good way to get to know our new VP. After the sixth loop we trotted back to the hotel in plenty of time to get cleaned up for our customer meeting.
