Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Sorry for the delay

As of tonight, I’ve caught the blog up with where it’s supposed to be. Everything from August 16th on is new. Please check ‘em out. I’ll try not to get behind again - at least, not for a while. As of this post, that means that the entire front page is new. After I do whatever I do tomorrow morning (leaning towards a bike ride) things will be falling off the bottom. Yes, I was that far behind.

Incidentally, this past weekend was the start of the 2005 AustinFIT season. That means its been two years since I started my serious running career with my death-defying two miles in over 20 minutes pace run. Wow. Two years. Puts things in perspective somewhat. Incidentally, two days ago I ran another long run, 22 miles, for what I believe is only my fourth run over 20 - and two of the others were marathons. This post details my pre-Freescale 22 miler from January. I ran the same pace, but that was including a big honkin’ break in the middle when I felt the need to move my car of all things. And the weather was about 40 degrees cooler. So I think I’m doing alright.

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

  1. Richard–We’re so happy to have the blogs back! Now I know how my workouts are going :-)

    You’re doing great!!

  2. You have grown so much as a runner, just image where you will be in another two years. :)

  3. It really amazes me that you’ve only been running two years. To see your times and hear the workouts, it sounds like you are one of those people who have been running all their life.
