Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Seven Miles Slow

Map of Seven Miles SlowAfter yesterday’s aborted run I decided that I’d better get out to the trail this morning and make sure that there weren’t any lingering problems. There weren’t. That’s always good to know.

I showed up at a little after six, right as the Tuesday speedwork group was heading off to do mile repeats, and set off to do the seven mile loop by myself. Normally I appreciate company but this time I was glad for the solitude; it let me think through a couple of technical issues, and it let me run slow. I mean like 10:30-11:00 slow. Hard to imagine that I was using that as my “goal” pace when training for Motorola 2004… Anyway. I let myself run smooth and easy, and it felt pretty good. No issues from my legs at all.

I picked it up a little to around 9:45 after stopping at MoPac for a drink. As I was going over the footbridge at the one mile marker, I saw a thin shadowy figure move past - it was Gilbert, running back to RunTex for a change (he normally drives). He yelled out to me and I sped up to catch him; we ran together for the last mile (this time at a really comfortable 8:30 pace) and he gave me some form tips (of course). My triceps were too tense: repositioning and relaxing my arms made me feel better all over. We also chatted a little about IBM on Sunday, and he felt that even though I’m tired a 7:20 goal was perfectly reasonable - depending on the weather.

For the last 1/2 mile or so we caught up with Jay and Alex, running with someone I didn’t recognize. That got us all to speed up and chat, and Gilbert actually admitted that it was too damn hot here. I mean, this from a guy who wears long sleeved shirts up into the 90s! I try not to harp on the weather, but it really has been miserable this weekend - new records in bold:

Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Monday
High 97 99 101 98 99 107 107
Low 73 74 73 72 80 70 76

Nope, those aren’t typos. Today should be nice though, its only supposed to hit 100 - which would be another record, but nothing like those 107s. 103 for tomorrow, but starting Thursday we should be back down to 85-90 for the high, a welcome change. While we didn’t get any rain this weekend, we were certainly feeling the hurricane’s power. Phew!
