Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Swim Time

Not by best swim this evening, but I got out there and put in the meters. I know that I really need more like three sessions a week, but for now I’m just trying to figure out the basics. I swam over at Big Stacy and managed to get 17 laps done, for a 1020M total distance.

I wore goggles for the first time today, and it took me 4-5 laps to get used to them. Then I adjusted them and it took me another 10 laps or so to readjust them to the point that they weren’t filling up with water. Unpleasant. I don’t know if my form improved much but I was doing a better job of turning my elbow down early and pulling through the water; I think that my speed is a bit better than it was. That’s a good thing, because my endurance seemed to go downhill if anything.

I want to get to the point that I’m comfortable doing a 2000M swim, straight, by the beginning of March. That’s a couple of weeks after Freescale is over, and I’ll be ready to start a pretty solid 12 week swim training schedule at that point for CapTex. I’ve got five weeks before NYC, during which I’m going to keep to my one-per-week schedule, a week off, and then 15 weeks (probably shooting for swimming twice a week) to get there. Somehow I think I’ll make it.

  1. Nice job on the swim! It can be a pain finding the right goggles that you feel good in. What kind are you wearing? I am loyal to the swedish goggle. You can customize the fit, and, at least for me, they never leak!

5 weeks before NYC! Time is flying! Enjoy the last few weeks — Ahh, the taper. Gotta love it!
