Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

1000M Swim

Swimming is getting easier for me - although that’s not saying much. Today followed what’s becoming my standard pattern of needing 5-6 laps to find a rhythym, then settling down and doing the remainder while working on various things. Still took a breather at the end of most laps, although I did manage a few 2-lap sets.

I found that if I relax, I can comfortably manage to breath every 4th stroke rather than every 3rd; my lung capacity is not the problem. Once anything slips, though, I end up breathing every 2nd. I think I’m taking far too much air in for that to work properly, and expelling the dead air is taking more time than I comfortably have, so I’m still exhaling when I should be inhaling, end up gulping air… you get the idea. Its absolutely my number one problem right now in the water.

17 60M laps, 1020 meters. Its getting easier.

  1. I have the problem of gulping water and then having to spit it out on the exhale. I tried to swim normal once and find a rhythem but never could. Gulp, spit, gasp, ack! Doesn’t work so well for me.

Sounds like a serious workout there, Richard. A 1K swim? That seems like so far to go. So is it swimming, then biking, then a tri?

  2. Glad to hear it’s getting easier. Also, good luck in NYC! Looking forward to the race report.

Great that the swimming is getting easier. Are you starting to feel the pre-race anxiety yet?
