Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Happy New Year

Happy new year, everybody. While I didn’t run long yesterday, I did do quite a lot of dancing. And, er, hydration. So its all good. But enough about that. Its time to check to see how I did against last year’s resoltions, and make a new list for this year. Let’s start with last year’s set:

Run well, stay healthy, and maintain a good base throughout the year

Hmm. I didn’t do too well there. I ran well for the most part, lost some base during the Spring but made up for it in the Fall. Could have been worse. Injuring my foot at NYC and then running the Motive/Turkey/Decker triumvrate really didn’t help, and I’m still not completely healed.

Restart working with Gilbert after Freescale, do NYC as a fall marathon, and really get some speed out.

Check, check, and … well, I did get some solid PRs, so check.

My true Freescale goal is relatively modest. I want to turn in a fun, comfortable, solid sub-4:00 marathon. I’m aiming somewhere in the 3:40 range, but I’ll be pretty flexible on exactly where given the way I feel on the day.

That’s funny - this is my current goal as well. After blowing up at NYC I really haven’t got my feet back under me. What makes me chuckle is that I’m probably in better shape now than I was then, but I feel more out of position for where I should be now. I’ve had a few people tell me that I could still go hard at Freescale, but … well, let’s save that for this year’s section.

Next season I want to really work on my speed, basically putting myself into my coach’s hands for all of my workout planning, with an eye towards possibly hitting that mystical 3:10 mark in 2006. I think I’ve got it in me.

Hahaha. Well, actually if I had run the race I wanted to run in February, this was … unlikely but not impossible. I seem to get a bit dispondant after a bad marathon though, which impacts my training for a couple of months thereafter.

Now, goals for 2006:

3:45 at Freescale

While I think that I’ve got more speed in me even now, I know that I’m not running at 100%. My training is nowhere near at the level I wanted it to be now because of this, and I’m just not ready to hammer for three and a half hours.

Get healthy and stay healthy

This includes massages, stretching, and seeing the doctor when I need to.

Hit the weights

I’d like to do four short workouts a week - legs on Wednesday/Friday and upper body on Tuesday/Thursday. My goal will be to do at least 100 workouts during the year.

Complete my first triathlon

Right now I’m still looking at doing the CapTexTri for starters.

Cross train

I’ll give myself a bye on this until after Freescale, but I’d like to do at least one 1000M swim and one solid bike ride every week.

Speed…

There had to be at least one speed goal, right? I want to run sub-seven at the turkey trot this year. That’s a 35:00 speed goal on a hilly course.

Homework

Crunches and push ups. Every day, no exceptions.

Don’t go crazy in the fall

If I run a fall marathon, I’ll probably do it purely for fun. If I run hard, I won’t do the distance challenge. I may not do the DC if I do any other serious distance races in the fall. Having said that, it’d be nice to scratch that 3:30 off the list this year…

Tomorrow: 10 miles.
