Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Doctor Visit

I saw Dr. McCarty early this morning and she took a look at my foot. She probed, prodded and poked, and of course nothing hurt. At least it was still slightly swollen, so I knew I wasn’t imagining things. A couple of x-rays were taken (and no, Virginia, there is no stress fracture) and the verdict remains the same, persistent tendonitis.

The perscription? Low mileage (20-25 per week, about what I’ve been doing). More toe stretches. Ice more quickly after running. Oh - and take two weeks off after Freescale, with the next month easy… and no marathons for six months after that. The half in Indy is okay, though.

I’ll be in Boston for most of this week on business, so we’ll have to see how much running I actually get in. I did pack my shoes, at least, which is a good start (and more than I managed over New Year’s).

My Freescale plans are getting smaller and smaller. Now I’m really thinking that I’ll try to run well at 3M, and do Freescale more like a solid training run. If I feel moderately strong, I’ll go for a 3:45 since a ton of folk I know are aiming for the same speed (and with Jason as our pacer, I’m sure that we’ll do fine). If I’m still feeling injured, I’ll just do it as a long run with more like a 3:55 goal. If I feel really good, I’ll ask someone to smack me until I start acting sensibly again.

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

  1. Good luck with everything! 3:55 is a pretty long training run

Cool! I volunteer for the job of “smacking” you if you start making crazy talk about Freescale! :-) Take it easy, get well, and I’ll see you next week.

  3. Sorry the foot is giving you trouble, Richard (although you do seem to be running an awful lot for someone with foot pain). How did they know it wasn’t a stress fracture? Just from how it hurt and stuff?

So what do you do for the tendonitus besides back off to let things heal up? Is it just something that will flare up when mileage increases? I’m asking because of the achilles tedonitus that I had, which is now vanished when my mileage got lower again.
