Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Bizarre Training Video

Yes, I know I’ve been idle for a while. I’ve been recovering from my tendonitis, making sure its 100% gone. I’m also running the Austin Freescale marathon on Sunday - its going to be the first one that I’m really just planning to enjoy, with no real goal (mainly because I’ve only been training 20-25 miles per week). But that’s not what I’m writing about this time. Gilbert, my running coach, has been doing all sorts of random things, mainly around promotion for his upcoming book. Recently the Statesman recorded a bunch of training footage, presumably to be filtered down at some point. It mainly covers a bunch of footwork drills. Probably boring but, if you’re interested, you can view it on the Statesman website. I’m in there somewhere, as are a bunch of people I run with.

And yes, the higher/open drill gets old fast when you’re doing it. Be thankful of what little editing there was. But it helps… And if anything, he was a little less animated during this session than he normally is without the camera around. The singing? Not every week, but its been known to happen. And remember, “The most important thing is, have fun, enjoy it.”

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

Great video. Thanks! I learned a lot and maybe it will help me with my hip flexor…the high open part of the form! He seems like a fun guy to be around!
