Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Feeling Fine

I’m feeling totally recovered from Freescale, which is odd because I know that a lot of other people are still talking about having stiffness, etc - and I haven’t even had a massage! I’m taking this to be a good sign that I ran well within myself, for which I’m quite happy. Still, its odd to see comments about stair walking, etc, go by on our local chat group. I even ran some today, just a hundred meters or so in a parking lot, but it felt great. Not that that’s official running, of course, since I’m supposed to be resting… yeah, right, resting.

Anyway, I’m already looking forward to racing on the 5th and rejoining my training group. And yes, I know that I still owe y’all a more detailed Freescale report. I have to have something running related to do over the next week and a half…

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...

  1. Beleieve it or not, running is a great way for your body to recover from a Marathon. If you don’t move, you muscles get even stiffer. I actually make a point of walking a lot the day of a marathon afterwords, and then stretch the next day. I ran 3.5 miles at lunch today, and feel much better for it.

  2. That’s great advice, but sadly part of the deal I made with my sports medicine doctor was that I wouldn’t run for two weeks after the marathon. What I will be doing is some biking and elliptical work; hopefully that will do the trick.

  3. Also, Barton Springs is your friend :-)

  4. Ooh get a massage! Massages=your friend.
