Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Bun Run

Well, its been about a month since I last updated - I figure its worth a shot. I’ve been doing some running, probably averaging 25-30 miles per week, although last week I didn’t run at all (not since Saturday’s 16 miler). Le sigh. But today I decided at the last minute to get up and run the Bun Run with da pup. He was so excited. We haven’t run together in, well, months, and now I feel all guilty about it.

We did about a mile slow warmup, and then rested. I let him dictate the race strategy, and he made a few rookie mistakes. Our first mile went by in 7:16, and we were having fun - he had been pulling a bit, but not too badly as long as I kept up with him. At the waterstop I poured 3 cups of water over him as we went by, which seemed to help (the day was hot and humid). By the halfway point he was slowing down, and by the 2nd mile marker (8:15ish) we stopped and he got a nice long drink out of a kiddie-pool full of water. The third mile was hard, he’d really worn himself out on the first one (and don’t we all know how that feels), and we turned the corner right around 8:45. I was able to get him excited enough to pick it up for a sprint to the finish though, and we did a good final 100M together.

We did come in 7th K9 Overall out of 47, with a chip time of 25:00.03. Not too bad - his previous 5K PR was 27:00.09 (what is it with those fractions?) two years ago. If I train next year we’ll do much better, I’m sure. And we’re both entered into the Congress Avenue Mile coming up on May 20. We’ll run together at 8:15, and then I’ll do it solo an hour later. That’s more his distance, so it should be a blast.
