Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Core Workout #3

Second week, er, different from the first.  Somewhat.  What was the same?  Pull-ups to start, chin-ups to finish, and a goofy half mile warmup/cooldown run.  We started with plank, as usual, and finished out with curb climbers.  What changed?  Well, to start with Carrie joined me for some mutual abuse at Adam’s orders, which was fun, in a misery loves company way.  We also mixed up the exercises somewhat.

True to form, we started out by getting into plank position.  This time, however, Adam noticed some latecomers and told them to hurry up with their arm workout because we were waiting for them.  You know what?  He doesn’t kid about stuff like that.  We held that pose for, oh, a while.  Only 2-3 minutes actually, which was far nicer than last Wednesday’s 5 minutes, but still.  I will admit that when they realized he was serious, they did hustle, so I can’t actually disagree with the tactics.

We added some traditional step-ups — bounding up and down the front of a tall bench for 100 times (each leg).  I wasn’t able to keep Adam’s cadence past the first fifty, but I did manage 94 on the left leg and 88 on the right.  I was also able to do all of the inverted-pushup / dip combinations without resorting to putting a knee down on any of the pushups, so that was another good one.  In fact, with the exception of my totally weak upper body, I did a much better job this week of the whole workout, a solid mid-pack performance.

My upper body, on the other hand, is pretty damn weak.  I need to actually start going to the gym and lifting heavy things, or whatever it is people do there.  I have a membership, but I think I use it more for post-workout showers than anything else.  Which is sad, and needs to change, especially if I want to get serious about hitting 3:30 in Dallas this fall.

My next official workout is Wednesday morning, where we’re doing the tempo race (4 miles at 5K pace).  Okay, its not quite that bad, but its the closest thing we have to a time trial in the Gazelles — two miles out pretty hard, then two miles back for negative splits with a stupid-fast final 200M.  Last month was my first tempo in a while and I totally crashed, so this month should be at least a little better.  I’d like to get it under 7:30 pace if nothing else; and even if I’m still suffering from the weather, the heat/humidity bundle is feeling a little more bearable these days, so it may just work out for me.
