Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Weight Loss Challenge

Well, okay, since NYC last November I’ve realized that I’ve let myself go a bit.  Not just in mileage, but in weight.  I was recently discussing this with Thon, who had a similar lament.  We realized that we had something in common; we were both about the same height, both had similar goal weights (160-162) and both had too much of a love of queso and cervesa.

So we ended up — after some Mexican food, of course — retreating to my house for a weigh-off.  And it was, well, disappointing to say the least.  Now, admittedly this was at the end of the day, but still.  One of us was 177.5, the other 180.  Ouch!  Where did that come from?  I’ve put on about five pounds in the last month, since I started ramping up my exercise; obviously I’m eating more than I need to as compensation.

So here’s the deal.  We’re both aiming to run the White Rock marathon on December 10th.  We’d both like to be lighter by then.  So we’re going to have a final weigh-in on 12/7.  The goal is to get down to 160.  First one there, wins.  In the not so unlikely event that neither of us make it that far, the lowest weight takes the cake (so to speak).  And the loser… well, we don’t actually have a forefit set up yet.  But we’ve asked some cruel friends for advice and, hey, if anyone out there has an idea, toss it into the comments.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some ice-cream to hide.

Advice? I’d start with that queso and cerveza. Those are cheap and sticky calories right there. :-) At least LIMIT those two tempting treats.

Seriously, drink more water, eat smaller but more frequent meals (the old grazing theory), and keep that ice cream hidden. Good luck, but be careful about a radical dietary change while you’re also trying to crank up your training for a December marathon.

Good luck. I’ve been thinking about this too, I don’t have a number, but I would like to feel more comfortable in my body. I know it’s going to be a fine balancing act though.

  3. Please don’t tell me that Mi Madres has to go!!! C’mon, they have the low carb meal :-)

  4. Some things are far to sacrosanct to mess with. I did contemplate backing down to one taco, but … which one to give up? The #16 is fattening, but its the “good fat,” so maybe I’ll stick with that. Or…
