Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Corrific Heat

Yeah that’s a bad title. Sosumi. Today was pretty brutal - one hour of core class in 102 degree heat, with no shade. We did a ton of leg work and my quads, already tired from this morning, got a really solid burn going. We also did some really solid dips: 154 of them to be precise (sets of 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, and 11, with the last 65 done on Adam’s cadence, slower and harder) then finished the count from 10 to 1 by super-setting step-ups and inverted push-ups (10 of each, then 9 of each, then 8, et cetera). Needless to say, my arms were burning by the end of it, and my push-up from had gotten mighty sloppy. If this wasn’t enough (and there was plenty more I’m not listing), we finished out the day with 30 eight-way body-builders. Ouch! After all that, I wasn’t able to do a single pull-up, although I’m getting closer: when I started core I could do maybe 80% after the workout. Now I think I’m up to about 95%.

I did manage to work in a half-mile warmup and a three-quarter-mile cooldown, bringing my total mileage for the day up over eight. Unfortunately, that’s also my total mileage for the week. I’m planning on doing 11 or so Friday morning, then another 11 or so on Saturday; call it a compromise between a recovery week and some make-up running, and you’d be right. That’ll bring me up to 30 for the week which should really be a bare minimum at this stage of the game.

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...
