Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Refreshing Recovery

I met up with Thon this morning for an easy seven (or so) miles. Because we wanted to mix things up we actually met over at Barton Springs. Since its free in the morning for a soak (and theoretically for swimming too) I’m going to try to make it out there at every opportunity. Anyway, by six AM we were off and running. We talked about various route options and settled on just doing the seven mile loop. Boring, but restful, considering that we have mile repeats tomorrow morning.

Water was not a problem today at least. We stopped underneath MoPac (bleah, warm), then got to South 1st and headed over that bridge to RunTex for more (not quite as warm). We were going to just u-turn at that point, but instead we continued South on the trail to the Pfluger footbridge and headed back North, then turned left back to MoPac (more warm water, the RunTex truck pulled up with the good stuff just as we were leaving) and back retracing our steps towards Zilker.

One nice thing was that we saw Gilbert just over the railroad tracks at Zilker filming his Tuesday/Thursday peeps. Thon motioned for silence as we ran towards him, then called out, “No man, your form’s all wrong with that camera! Tighten up your abs!” and other similar words of Tuhabonye-like encouragement. We all laughed, and then continued on to the pool for a good soak. Is it possible to run in Austin without seeing Gilbert? You be the judge, but my money’s on, “No.”

Jumping off the diving-board is the best way to deal with the cold shock that is Barton Springs and, indeed, on a muggy warm day like today it was a wonderful feeling. Not too cold at all. I do wish that I’d actually swam some instead of just soaking and chatting, but such is life. I’ll try to do better on Thursday morning.
