Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Status Update

While my echocardiogram didn’t show anything serious (as in time-critical), or any indication that I’d missed a weak heart attack (for example), it did come back showing mild global hyperkenisis. What does that mean? Well, basically my heart is working inefficiently at the moment, but not in any one particular area (that’s the global part). My doc said that this was quite possibly a result of two weeks worth of fever, or could be an indication that I had had very mild viral myocarditis along with something else (which she classed as unlikely, but possible)… or I might just have a weak heart. We’ll be repeating the test whenever I get better to find out more, which at this point looks to be some time in the Spring of 2012. Sigh. Oh, and feel free to tease me about my spelling on any of this stuff.

Today is a lab day; we’re going to repeat all of the basic blood-work that we did earlier, check off all of the “normal” test boxes, and then I’ll have a bonus round where they start testing for the more obscure issues. The one that I remember was West Nile virus. She did warn that some of these will take longer to process, since they have to be sent off to more specialized facilities.

Oh - and I have to keep my exertions to a minimum, and continue to try to manage my headaches, dizziness, etc. That means, among other things, no sneaking out for a 2-3 mile walk around the neighborhood with little jogging stretches thrown in to see how I feel, which had been a back-of-the-mind plan for Saturday. I think that she’s concerned that something “that difficult” could throw me right back where I started, depending on what this is.

Ah, well. At least I don’t have a problem with needles…

Man, I’ve been reading the posts over the past few days. I empathize with you — really. The thing that came to my mind was a carditis of some sort, whether it was myo of perio. If so, that stuff is serious, and the docs need to step on it.

    lyme?

  3. Inner-ear infection throwing off equilibrium? that would account for dizziness and nausea? Not that they haven’t already figured out that one… isn’t the internets and all the “diagnose yourself and your friends” phenomena fun, frightening and a bit disturbing? Hope you get some resolution earlier than 2012.
