Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Still Can’t Do Much

Yesterday I managed to tire myself out. Twice. The first time was pretty simple; after getting up just before 9, I went out and had breakfast with some friends, then my wife and I (without taking a nap) went to the supermarket! I know! I mean, we must have gone up and down at least a third of the aisles. I had started to lag pretty early on, but once we were in the checkout line I got the keys and went and waited in the car, sitting down with my head in my hands.

Then in the evening, as if I hadn’t learned my lesson, I actually went out to see a movie (Ideocracy which, by the way, is incredibly recommended). It wasn’t too loud, which is good, and there were only a few times that I had to close my eyes and take a few deep breaths - I didn’t have to retreat to the lobby even once. But after sitting through 80 minutes of it and grabbing a burger (veggie) at the new Galaxy Cafe afterwards, well, that was too much excitement and I just had to go to bed.

Before 8pm. Yup, yesterday was an 11 hour day. This is a little short, even for me, but not all that atypical these days.

This is annoying, and it feels slightly embarrassing. Its hard for me to keep reminding myself that this is an illness, and that I should blame it and not myself for what’s happening. But just a month ago I was running 20 milers and feeling fine. Now my doctor (the same one who got me through my first 18 miler with ITB) has flat out forbidden me to even walk around the neighborhood, and after this weekend I have to say that I agree with her caution.

But it still sucks.

It does suck, but you will get through this and come back strong. Can’t wait to have you back running with us.

Sorry we missed y’all last night.

  2. yucky — are you sure you’re not pregnant? That pretty well sums up how I felt in the first trimester of both pregnancies! Well, probably not… Just know we’re pulling for you and thinking about you.

  3. …and I was hoping it was just the enchiladas that made you tired! In my thoughts!
