Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

New Skin

Well, I can’t run, but that doesn’t mean that I have to stay totally static. I decided to get into the spirit of the season and help to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Especially since I had an admittedly brief scare myself a couple of weeks ago. Do yourself a favor - get tested, and make sure that your loved ones do the same. And if you have a mutable website, why not go Pink for October yourself?

Yes, the results and other links are back — no pictures, yet, because I’ve only taken a few minutes to set things up. Isn’t template-based skinning cool? Previous posts are summarized below in the footer, as are comments on the individual pages. Now all I need to do is get better, and I’ll be able to add some content as well.

One of these days…

I’m having good days and bad, and within the days some days are better than others. My resting HR goes from the low 50s on a good day to the high 60s on a not-so-good one. I’m still getting lightheaded when walking or standing: a good reason not to ride a bike, even if I was feeling like I had the stamina to do so. And on bad days, I’m still getting concentration-headaches very easily. My fevers are gone, but my temperature is now averaging about a degree under where it used to.

But its getting better, I think. At least, I want to believe so. Although, I wish I could figure out why I’m so tired all the time. Its not just fatigue, its tiredness: I had over 12 hours of sleep last night, and I still keep trying to doze off today. At least with all this sleep you’d think that the circles under my eyes would be going away, but no. Oh, well.

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...
