Bad Day and a New Symptom
Yesterday was not a great day. I had a business meeting to go to, and it was in San Antonio. Not a huge deal most of the time. I drove over there in the early morning, and settled in at 9:00 for what was going to be a couple of hours followed by lunch and a leisurely drive home. I figured that I could easily and slowly make my way home, maybe the back way, where it wouldn’t be a big chore.
That was the idea. What actually happened was that the 2 hour meeting became an all day affair. By about 3 in the afternoon, I was pretty flaky and had a massive headache building. By the end of the day, I felt pretty bad. In fact, by the time that the end of the day rolled around, I realized that I was in no shape to be driving back to Austin. Put it this way: even my eyeballs hurt. Since I was down in San Antonio, this presented a little bit of a problem. Luckily I have a wonderful wife; she and my father in law came down to hang out on the Riverwalk and eat Mexican food with me, then she drove me home. Even so, we had to stop half way for me to recover from the drive.
Needless to say, that didn’t make me feel particularly strong. Or smart.
This morning I had a meeting with my cardiologist; that’s where I picked up another symptom. They took a blood pressure reading, and it was 106/68. The nurse checked both arms, and it was the same; she just said that this was, “good.” Sure, maybe its good, but its also a lot lower than I’m usually reading (120/80 on a good day, 138/85 once on a stressful day). Weird, huh.
Anyway, I ended up scheduled for three more tests. On Friday I’m going in for another, higher quality echocardiogram. On the 30th, I’ve got a treadmill stress test. And this morning I had to go in for some more bloodwork. Of course, they told me to just go to my doctor’s office, who told me that they weren’t set up to do that type of test (needed to freeze the sample or something) so I had to go to another lab, where I got to sit for an hour before my turn came up. Why is it that medical clinics almost always seem to be in dilapidated buildings? The chairs were comfy, at least. An hour of waiting, one vial of blood drawn, and I was on my way off again.
Anyway, when I was at the doctor’s office (TSFM, not the cardiologist) being told that they couldn’t do the blood work despite what the cardiologist’s office had said, Dr. McCarty stopped in and chatted with me. My lovely wife had talked to her yesterday during a checkup, and I was told in no uncertain terms that I shouldn’t have gone to SA. More than that, she got me to admit that I still had a massive headache and more dizziness. I was told to get myself over to the clinic, then to go home and go to bed. That’s pretty much what happened.

Glad you are seeing the cardiologist. I thought you were taking medical leave? It sounds like you need to be taking things a little more seriously. But seriously I do know how frustrating it is to not be able to do what you usually can do without effort. love you anyway!

Gak! More weirdness. Every time you think they’re narrowing things down, something new comes up. I’d be climbing the walls by now. It seems that you are handling this whole series of episodes a lot better than I would be…or maybe you’re just sparing us the wailing and gnashing of teeth that you’re doing behind the scenes? Keep that positive attitude that you seem to have most of the time, and sooner or later you’re going to come out from under all this junk. I’m rooting for you, my friend!

There’s a certain amount of frustration, yes. It was managable at first, now it comes and goes with greater intensity. I’m trying to take things very easy for the next couple of weeks; sleeping in, napping, taking care of myself as the number one priority. And sooner or later I’ll find out what’s been going on, or get better, or something…

phoo — be careful while you figure all this out. I’m still hoping and praying for you to find an answer to what’s making you swoony.
