Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

New Year’s Eve

Well, another year has rolled around. I’m currently sitting in the Albuquerque airport, waiting to see if I’ll make it back to D/FW tonight (my originally plan to pick up a connecting flight to land in AUS around 10, leaving just enough time to hit the good part of a new year’s party, is, alas, a distant memory at this point). Still, this gives me plenty of time to sit and reflect about the good things in life. Not the least of which is that ABQ has comfortable seats near a power outlet and fast, free internet access. Still.

Last year, I set out some resolutions. Let’s see how I handled them, shall we?

Run well, stay healthy, and maintain a good base throughout the year

Well, I was doing pretty well here until I got sick this fall, and that was most certainly not caused by my running. In fact, more than one doctor has mentioned that if I hadn’t been in as good shape before I fell ill, I’d have been hit a whole lot harder. So I’ll give myself partial credit here. My fitness has slumped (as has my figure) since I stopped running, but the good news there is that I’m going to be running again starting tomorrow!

Not far, probably not fast, but running nonetheless. That’s pretty cool.

Whoops, that was a 2005 resolution. My answer still stands. Now for the 2006 ones…

3:45 at Freescale

Bzzzzt. I missed this one. Still, given my limited base between NYC and AUS, my comfortable 3:54 wasn’t half bad.

Get healthy and stay healthy

See the first answer, above.

Hit the weights

This one I really, really want to work on in 2007. I failed it in 2006, and I think it had an impact on my running, especially the hills.

Complete my first triathlon, Crosstrain, Speed…

All fell by the wayside. Wow, I feel pretty bad at this point.

Crunches and push ups. Every day, no exceptions.

This I was doing well at, especially including my twice-a-week core class with Adam, until I fell ill. I’ll start this up again when I’m in a good position to as well.

Don’t go crazy in the fall

Heh… No comment.

Oh, well. No resounding successes, and a lot of failures. Next year, I’ll attempt the same list, and see if I can fare any better.

Until then… Happy Running!
