Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Or was that two steps for… no, I was right the first time. But I get ahead of myself.

This morning everyone I know (with maybe two exceptions - maybe) was out running. On the trail, on the street, wherever, but they were running. And so was I! Okay, so I was going a lot less far than anyone else, but still, I was back in the pack. I decided to take the wonder-lab Bear out for his first actual run in about 5 months and he was thrilled! We did the 1.8 mile park loop and, while he was a little overexcited at first, he soon settled down and we had a wonderful time. I was really looking forward to doing more runs with him so that we could be ready for this year’s Bun Run in April. We chopped about two minutes off, for a sub-nine-minute pace. Not record-setting, but a fantastic time for me.

After that first loop, I took a few minutes break, drank some PowerAde, and picked up Sabrina (my other pup) for another repetition of the same loop. This was good, because both she and I weren’t ready to go fast. Me because of my earlier run, and Sabrina because she’s a couch-potato (yard-kibble?). We were back on track for another 10:00 pace run, but about 400M before the house my back started to hurt.

Then about 395M before the house it started to hurt a whole lot. Yeah, that sucked. I stopped, stretched, ran a little - still painful, so I walked back. So much for my “long run.” Still, I’m sure its temporary.

About

I'm Richard Stanford, a fit, happy runner. Of course, that wasn't always the case. Dip into the archives to follow my progress from couch potato to sub-four hour marathoner.

I also like to cook, write, code, and play with power tools...
