Running Towards Fitness

Personal Awareness
The ancient Greeks used to believe that a healthy mind and a healthy body not only went together, but were both critical for happiness and a successful life. They were also intertwined, meaning that a weakness in either area would affect the other. When I started this transformation I was overweight and full of excuses. And by overweight I don't mean just a few pounds - I weighed over 70 pounds more than I do now. I finally took my life into my own hands and started exercising. At the time, I had no idea where it would lead - to a stronger body, a happier, more nimble mind, and a chest full of race medals. Healthy mind, healthy body, indeed! It hasn't been easy, or without issues, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.

Feeling bad, getting faster

It was cold this morning.  Cold as in 32 degrees with an ice cold gusty 10-12mph wind, to be precise.  That meant that getting out of a nice, warm bed was that much harder than normal, even though I wasn’t going to be running until 7am, comparatively late in the day to get starting.  I did what has become the traditional 2.85 mile run, and within the first quarter mile my heartrate was racing - about 10bpm over what it normally is at that point.  That’s the opposite from the direction I’d like to see it going.

I don’t know if I’m coming down with something - my wife does seem to be getting a cold - or if I’m just not fully recovered from Monday’s run/gym doubleheader.  Either way, I’m taking it easy and won’t run again until the weekend.

The good news is that, while I continued to “run as I felt,” I got substantially faster today, even though I felt like crap going up the last few hills.  And yes, the speed increase happened after the HR spiked, so its not that.  On Monday I ran (relatively) quickly with splits of 10:41, 10:25, and 8:13.  Today I had 10:06, 9:30, and 8:03.  Looking at the data, it seems as if my HR was only averaging 5bpm over Monday’s run too - that’s more to do with the fact that it didn’t get much higher on the hills, but my recovery time was shot and it stayed elevated much more often.

Still, good things are happening.  I’m going to skip the gym today, and probably won’t go tomorrow either (although you never know).  Its hard, balancing the desire to make a strong comeback with the urge not to do too much too fast and backslide.  One thing that I do know, though:

Today was a grand day for a run.
